Overall impressions:I have been using the iPhone and iOS since the first few months of release, so transitioning and working within the iPad environment was straightforward. It did not take long after playing with a first generation iPad to realize that these devices would eventually become integral to education and, ultimately, how we teach and… -

Also, 10MB of storage space set for new WP sites seems rather small. Can we up the quota to 100MB at least?

I just wasn’t sure if we could implement new plugins ourselves, without them being implemented at the root level. There is some functionality that could allow it, but, seems we don’t have permissions at the moment. (http://wp.tlt.psu.edu/sts200f11/wp-admin/plugin-install.php) Anyhow, I second your suggestion!

I want a tag cloud, maybe the facebook widget, what about a cool Flickr widget? Any other widgets […] ViewYeah, I agree. It seems the wp-content folder is off limits with our permission level. The wp-content folder, where the plugins reside, points to the main level folder, i.e. http://wp.tlt.psu.edu/sts200f11/wp-content points to http://wp.tlt.psu.edu/wp-content This means we can’t upload plugins ourselves, which is also a frustrating aspect of…[Read more]

It’s interesting, the move to WordPress. I have been using WordPress for quite a while and didn’t know about this microblogging functionality. I like it. I used WordPress in the first version of ClimateEthics.org, which is now on the Rock Ethics blogs. At that point, there were a lot of problems with the site getting hacked, requiring constant…[Read more]

Try the p2 theme. Alternately, you can create a ”group” rather than a ”blog”. All experimental. We are learning as we go, so I can’t really say which is better or what the caveats might be.
How do I create a group? I only see an option to create a blog.
look under the groups tab on the front page. Do you see a button to create a group?
Ah, I see. Ok. So, I could create a group for a class and invite students?
You can try it. You will be the first to do so, so just be aware you are breaking new ground. If you do, your experience will help inform us on the uses of buddypress groups for classes.
I cannot seem to be able to invite anyone that I’m not already friends with or that does not belong to the larger blog. Is this a setting about private versus public blogs?
I think that’s right. What we’ve done (and by “we” I mean “Chris Hubing”) on wikispaces (confluence) is to allow someone to “pre-populate” a space with people who are unknown to the software, but known to something like the LDAP directory. As a person logs onto the site for the first time, his ID is “created” and now the permissions…[Read more]
There are actually two issues here. First, yes we need to re-populate the userids so users don’t have to log in before they are known to the system. The second issue is one of how buddypress functions. Buddypress does not let you invite someone to a group unless you are already friends with them. It was not designed with the class roster use…[Read more]
